Day 59: Woman’s Straw Hat Set (Part 1)

Day 59 login

Now I would like to begin the fun part of making Japanese-style clothing.

This is the hat I wanted to make until I acquired the [Craft] skill, the [Woman’s Straw Hat], and its accompanying “Veil of Insects”.

Ichimegasa (Woman’s Straw Hat) is a wide-brimmed hat featuring a small conical point at its center. The long, veil-like, thin cloth that hangs around the hat is called the “Veil of Insects.”

It may be hard to imagine from the description alone, but if I tell you that it’s just like the woman on the package of a certain rice from Akita Prefecture, you’ll probably recognize it right away. Yes, the one she is wearing is the Ichimegasa.

Strictly speaking, Ichimegasa is the name of the conical part itself, and not all Ichimegasa come with a hanging veil. However, the recipe for Kimakura’s Ichimegasa comes with a veil from the beginning, and this form is considered orthodox.

The minimum required materials are: [Dried Bamboo (Framework・Small)], dried straw or sedge to form the conical body of the hat, thin cloth for the hanging robe, and thread for sewing them together.

Since there were no restrictions on performance, as usual, I chose the material with an emphasis on design.

First, the material for the conical hat itself, which I have no particular preference for, is [Dried Sedge], which is the most popular material.

What we want to play with is the hanging veil.

The choice material is [Sylvia Lamy (White)], which has a see-through feel. This material is resistant to charm when used for sewing, but it is said to be effective in repelling insects when used for a woman’s straw hat.

The length of the hanging veil should be enough to cover the waist completely. Cut this into a rectangle, and prepare five identical pieces.

And here, I’m going to do [Embroidery].

Yes, embroidery skills!

A while ago, I found this skill at the library. The excitement I felt at that time was overwhelming.

And with that, it became possible to get [Embroidery Design] at the library and handicraft stores. I was able to find [Hydrangea], [Night Sky], [Birdcage], and so on, one per day at the library alone, which made it even more fun to go there.

Additionally, some individuals occasionally sell their designs on the World Market. This is also very helpful.

Anyone in any profession can register a design by drawing it on paper, but I don’t have any artistic ability.

However, most of the player-made designs are simple [Design] or designs for other professions, so they are inferior to the official embroidery designs.

Embroidery is a broad term, encompassing many different types of stitches.

Straight stitch, satin stitch, and chain stitch. Even Western and Japanese embroidery are entirely different.

In the official specialized skill patterns, such details are included in the information.

For example, in this hydrangea embroidery pattern, the user selects a skill, specifies the pattern, thread, and placement, and the embroidery is instantly applied to the fabric. However, upon closer examination, the hydrangea leaves are worked in chain stitch, the flowers in French knot stitch, and so on, reflecting the unique embroidery techniques.

This doesn’t happen with a simple design drawn on paper and registered, because it doesn’t contain such stitching information. The stitching method is consistent: straight stitches for lines, satin stitches for filled-in areas, and so on.

It is possible to use the patterns for other professions, such as [Engraving Design], for embroidery, but the specifications are the same as those for regular patterns.

However, with stitch skills, you can specify the stitching method. Since I have only acquired the [straight stitch] skill, I can’t go into detail, but I am sure that I will be able to embroider with more freedom and variety if I make full use of these skills.

Even if I were to do it, it would take me a considerable amount of time. Since my current skills are limited and I have yet to master even the official designs, which are common patterns and monotonous techniques, they are still enjoyable to create.

Here is the one I will use this time, [Iris Design (Medium)]. Since I haven’t found a Japanese-style design yet, I bought a player-made one, as I usually do.

The creator, Kohaku-san, sells several handmade Japanese-style designs like this, and they are a real artist. Examining the other items for sale, they appear to be crafted by a skilled artisan. The fact that they offer the same designs in various sizes, including large, medium, and small, as well as in monochrome and color, is a testament to their consideration for different professions.

Again, the existence of this kind of person is beneficial. The price is reasonable at 1,000 kima per piece, and I can’t help but indulge in shopping around.

I chose white for the thread color, and I laid out the iris embroidery on the cloth for the conical hat. Then I layered the same creator’s [Haze Design (Medium)] on top of it, carefully balancing the two.

The embroidery is made with white thread on white, so it is not particularly noticeable, but the hat itself is plain, so this small amount of flair will do just fine.

Is it too subtle for a man to wear an embroidered Ichimegasa?

It’s a fantasy world, and all kimakura boys are good-looking unless they have some weird character make-up, so it’s a good look.

Besides, like Kamikiri-sama mentioned earlier, men in gorgeous clothes are justified in the two-dimensional world. I won’t accept any objections.

Another thing I would like to add to the hat and robe is an “Ornamental string”. The official recipe doesn’t list this material, so I’ll sew it onto the veil in advance.

The item to be used is [Royal Silk Braid・Navy・Strong・Material].

Tie bowknots at regular intervals on the long braided cords. Prepare five identical cords and sew them to the top of the robe.

Now, the preparation is ready. Activate the Craft skill!

[Memeko]
Congrats congrats LOL

[Kuma-tan]
Snow field solo?

[Memeko]
I was thinking of doing some random play lol

[Kuma-tan]
Let me join (heart)

[Memeko]
Sure (heart)
I can’t believe you’re continuing to talk to me in chat when I’m right in front of you lol

[Kuma-tan]
I’m a BBA, so I’m used to chatting via text

[Memeko]
It’s hard to understand lol

[Kuma-tan]
How old are you, Memeko-chan?

[Memeko]
I’m 18 (heart)

[Kuma-tan]
Also, there are association members nearby

[Memeko]
Don’t ignore me ><

[Memeko]
I see
If you join a clan, you’re friends with people you don’t really know, so you have to be careful

[Kuma-tan]
I’m just saying that Memeko-chan and I are both going to the big ones, aren’t we?

[Memeko]
(;´・ω・)
I’m just temporary
I’ll go back as soon as I’m done

[Kuma-tan]
Hmmmm?
The debt was just for clothes, right?
That’s a lot of money
If I stay here and listen to Momo-san’s advice, I should be able to pay back that much in a week~!

[Memeko]
(; ・`ω・´)

[Kuma-tan]
Jeez… (´◉ω◉` )

[Memeko]
:(;゛゜’ω゜’):

[Kuma-tan]
(´◉ω◉` )

[Memeko]
Because, because, I didn’t think there was such an easy way to save money (PД`q.)
I’ve been making a little money mainly in production, and it’s starting to feel a bit silly…
I think I’ll study here for a while longer

[Kuma-tan]
From what I hear, you’ve been very generous lately (´◉ω◉` )

[Memeko]
…Kima is a living thing~ it doesn’t stay in one place~
Well, you know what Momotaro-san often says, don’t you?
“Get the economy flowing.”

[Kuma-tan]
There are rumors that a mysterious source of income exists, neither from production nor from expedition? (´◉ω◉` )

[Memeko]
…Ugh ☆
It’s great to be in a mixed clan with so many kind people!
It’s an experience you can never have in Alkali~

[Kuma-tan]
Your return seems a long way off…
Personally, I’d welcome it

[Kuma-tan]
However, if you stay too long, not only will you be stuck, but you won’t have anywhere to go back to, so please plan your stay carefully lol
I think Shadow’s clan is pretty mature, but women still get into some messes

[Memeko]
Uh, yes
I’ll keep that in mind
